Question 1:

My husband and I have been following Dr Leman’s podcast and have been a fan ever since we read “Sheet Music” as part of our marriage counseling.
5 years later we have a two year old, and as wonderful as she is, we feel we don’t always react the best way!  How do you deal with a 2 year old who isn’t quite old enough to understand some of the parenting tactics in Dr Leman’s toolbox (ie: B doesn’t happen until A is complete) but is still most definitely aware of when she is doing wrong/whining/driving us crazy/etc. :)

Thanks so much!!

Answer:

  • 2 year olds won’t conceptualize these concepts yet.
  • Roughly at age 4, your kids can understand the action orientated techniques.
  • Whining happens because it pays off. When they whine next time, pick them up and put them into their room and close the door. Keep it closed till she is quiet. Don’t say anything.
  • Often we simply give in just to silence them, but we are reinforcing the bad behavior.
  • Beware of over using the word “No”

Question 2: Playground with my 3 yr old

Hi, I run a workout/play date at my local park. I lead the mommies through a short workout while the kids play, ride bikes, etc… It seems to run smoothly for the most past, except for my kid! He is 3 and hangs on me, wants me to push him on the swing, you name it, when I am trying to lead the ladies. When I am done with the workout he magically goes off and plays. I know it’s a power thing but unsure how to handle it in this situation.
Thank you for your time and your books, I am a big fan!
We workout for about a half hour, I keep it short for the kids sake.

Answer:

  • Your 3 year old clearly sees that other people are getting Mom’s attention. He is saying I need Mom’s attention.
  • Option: Get someone to watch your child for the 30 minutes.
  • Your child has you over a barrel, since it is a social setting. I’d recommend finding someone to watch him for the 30 minutes.
