What advice do you have for parents who have adult children that live at home?
Do any of you have adult-children who are still living at home? Have come back home? Maybe they are completely unmotivated to work or do anything around the house.
We have heard from a number of you in this situation, so today we are addressing this struggle.

Dr. Leman’s Answer

Why do kids stay living at home?

1. They are defeated perfectionists who are fearful of even trying.
2. They are going through really rough times and need to cocoon at home.
3. Really unmotivated.

What should be done about it?

1. Set a definite amount of time they will be living there.
2. Set expectations, chores, etc.

What about parents of young kids who want to avoid this in the future?

1. Start early, demonstrate a life of direction. Give the kids lots of Vitamin N and E.

2. At age 13, begin to watch for signs of lack of motivation, and start addressing the upcoming reality of adulthood.
